What do you think of when you hear the word, "play"? Often play is associated with fun. Or it may be a word you associate with children only. However, it is great for adults too. First, what is play? According to Oxford Languages, play is "to engage in activity for enjoyment and recreation rather than a serious or practical purpose". And did you know there are more benefits to play than fun or enjoyment. Play has various benefits.
Reduces stress
Builds cognitive flexibility
Inspires imagination
Supports creativity
We live in a result-based society with constant busyness; therefore, play seems unproductive, childish, or selfish. Let's challenge that thinking. Play brings JOY! Play is when you're doing something for the joy of it. Play can be:
Reading a book for 15 minutes because it fuels your imagination
Going to a pottery class as an enjoyable hobby
Enjoying a walk in nature because you love it
Dancing as you get ready for the day (bring those 80's and 90's moves back 😅)
Going outside with children and just being a kid enjoying the bugs on the ground or seeing how high you can swing - let your imagination soar
EVERYONE benefits from play, but how do you fit play in as an adult? As you see from the list above, play can be little moments throughout the day or scheduled activities you put on your calendar. Release the guilt and enjoy play in your days - it's good for your well-being.
